During the first week of the work term, the Mentors and / or Supervisors will be approached by the student in an effort to determine the expectations for the work term. In other words, what does the student have to accomplish and / or demonstrate for the work term to be deemed successful. It is the hope of the Co-op Office that this conversation will also include a discussion around student expectations.
Since this will be the student's third, and in most cases, final work term, a successful work term might include receiving an offer for full-time permanent employment prior to graduation. So again, ensuring that the student knows what needs to be accomplished or demonstrated during the work term for a potential offer to be made is extremely important.
The student will record the results of this conversation as Step 1 of the Work Term III Expectations and Work Term Report.
A site visit from the Co-op Coordinator will be arranged between week 6 and 10 of the work term. All in-town visits are done in person, out-of-town discussions / evaluations are done by phone or Skype.
The site visit will consist of:
- A 30 minute meeting with the Co-op Coordinator, Mentor and / or Supervisor, and student. During this group portion of the meeting the student will provide the Co-op Coordinator with an overview of tasks that have been assigned to date. This will be followed by a review of the expectations that were recorded during Week I. If the employer or Co-op Coordinator idenfity any additional skills or learning that would benefit the student, the student will record those in Step 2 of the Work Term III Expectations and Work Term Report. The Mentor and / or Supervisor may also be asked to provide information regarding their employer's evaluation and hiring practices.
- A 25 - 30 minute one-on-one meeting with the student and Co-op Coordinator.
In month four of the work term, the student will arrange a meeting with the Mentor and / or Supervisor to discuss employability skills the student demonstrated during the work term. We are specifically interested in those that the Supervisor and / or Mentor would like to see in the Profile section of the resume of a potential new hire. This will help the student to prepare effective statements for the Profile section of any subsequent "Grad" resume.
Prior to the end date of the work term, an Employer Final Evaluation of Co-op Student Web Form must be completed and reviewed with the student. You will be made aware of the due date for this evaluation by the student you have working for you and it will be noted on the evaluation webform.
